Rescue crews worked well into Monday night to transport an injured hiker off Notch Trail in western Oxford County after her emergency beacon alerted game wardens she needed help.

According to Deborah Turcotte, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, the woman badly injured her ankle and needed to be carried off the mountain trail in Grafton Township, northwest of Newry. Her name was not available late Monday night.

Officials started mobilizing a search for the woman at about 5:17 p.m. Search and rescue crews from Bethel, Newry and Mahoosuc Rescue assisted in the effort.

Turcotte said the woman injured her ankle Sunday and had hoped she’d be able to walk on it Monday, but when she was unable to do so, she sounded the alarm for help. She said officials expected it would take several hours to get the woman off the trail.
