FAIRFIELD – Torey Carr threw six shutout innings to boost the Winthrop Red Sox past the Fairfield Rockies for the third time this season, 10-4, in Pine Tree League baseball.
Winthrop (7-1) scored four runs in the top of the first inning to take command. Brett Witherell’s sharp single, three consecutive walks and Bob Cochran’s bases-loaded double fueled the two-out rally.
Consecutive singles by Dennis McHugh, Mike House and Matt McCarthy again loaded the bases in the fifth, setting the stage for Dave Ricker Jr.’s three-run double.
Matt Richardson mopped up on the mound for Winthrop. Troy Scott took the loss for Fairfield (1-4). House, McCarthy, McHugh and Ricker were repeat hitters for the Red Sox. Randy Brodeur banged out two hits for the Rockies.
