GRAY — The body of a 78-year-old Gray man found floating face down in Little Sebago Lake on Tuesday afternoon will be examined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office on Wednesday to determine the cause of death.

A statement by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office reported that the unresponsive man was discovered in the water at about 2 p.m. not far from his waterfront home on Oak Drive. Capt. Don Goulet of the Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday night that the man’s body was discovered by his longtime girlfriend, who went looking for him after returning home from doing errands and locating his belongings.

The man’s name was not being released as of Tuesday night pending the notification of out-of-state family. His body was pulled to shore by county Deputy Steven Welsh, who was the first official at the scene. Firefighters and emergency personnel from Gray attempted life-saving measures, but were unable to resuscitate the man and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Goulet said the man’s girlfriend told authorities that the last time she’d seen him was around 7:30 a.m. when he left to go swimming with friends. He added that she told investigators that she noticed all his belongings in the house when she returned from errands later in the day and assumed he rowed a small aluminum boat to a nearby island that he owned.

Goulet said the woman reported that a neighbor had told the man that several youths were spotted on the island over the holiday weekend. She said he wanted to row out there to determine if any damage had been done to the property.

“She knew that he was upset about the potential damage to the island,” Goulet said. “There was no indication that he ever got into the boat. It was still moored in about three feet of water.”

Goulet said that the man’s body was found near the boat.
