LISBON — The Moxie Festival’s Chief Worumbo Canoe Race is still set for Sunday despite high water levels on the river, organizers said. The downstream race starts at 11 a.m.
Marnie Coleman, president of the Androscoggin Land Trust, which is organizing the race, said Thursday that deputies from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office used the county’s patrol boat to check the 6-mile course from Durham to Lisbon on Thursday and determined the water conditions were safe for the race.
Race officials will keep an eye on conditions, but as of Thursday the race was a go, Coleman said. About 100 people had registered for the race, which is in its 11th year.
Safety crews from the Sheriff’s Office will follow racers downstream and a safety crew from the Lisbon Fire Department will be on hand Sunday, Coleman said. The race features competitive classes but is largely meant to be a fun event, she said.
Registration is $15 per person and includes a T-shirt and lunch from Sam’s Italian Sandwich Shoppes.
