Mechanic Falls sweeps

DISFIELD — Swasey-Torrey’s seventh-inning comeback fell short when it stranded the tying and winning runs in scoring position in dropping a pair of close American Legion games to Mechanic Falls on Saturday.

Mechanic Falls scored twice in the eighth inning for a 5-3 extra-inning triumph in Game 1, before hanging on for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

After Dixfield tied the opener with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, the game remained tied 3-3 until the eighth, when Mechanic Falls used two walks a hit-batsman, a single and an error to score twice. Wendell King hit a triple and a single for Mechanic Falls, while Kyle Hutchinson and Arik Fenstermacher had doubles for Swasey. Tyler Gates added two hits.

The nightcap saw Swasey fall behind 5-2 before storming back in the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Chaisson, who hit a solo home run to right in the second inning, ripped a two-out, two-run double with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to one, but Eric Bolduc was retired for the final out when his smash was knocked down by the second baseman.

Ryan Lafleur and Spencer Ross combined on a four-hitter for Swasey. Mike Litchfield picked up the win for Mechanic Falls.
