The Androscoggin Historical Society has hired Walter D. MacBain of Lewiston, a retired office manager, as its administrative assistant.

Doug Hodgkin, head of the search committee, said MacBain was chosen from among five applicants for the new part-time position. He will be responsible for running the society’s office and museum, which are located on the third floor of the Androscoggin County Courthouse in Auburn.

The Board of Directors approved the appointment at its meeting on July 8. MacBain will succeed Michael C. Lord, executive secretary for 12 years, who continues to serve the society as a board member.

MacBain worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company as an office manager in Lewiston for 35 years. In addition to his office background he is an avid reader of history. He has a bachelor’s degree from Fairfield University and a master’s degree in English from Boston College.

The Androscoggin Historical Society preserves and promotes the rich history of the area. It operates the Clarence E. March Library with extensive holdings in local history and genealogy, and the Davis-Wagg Museum filled with artifacts of local historical interest.
