DIXFIELD – Fire broke out at about 1:42 p.m. Tuesday inside a silo used to store sawdust to fuel a boiler at the Irving Forest Products sawmill, according to Dixfield fire officials and Irving spokeswoman Mary Keith in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada.
Keith said there were no injuries and no down time, although 10 workers in the nearby specialty plant were evacuated.
The cause of the easily contained fire is under investigation, Keith added.
White smoke from the silo could be seen from Third Street as firefighters tried to reach the fire burning under 20 feet of sawdust in the silo. Mill workers made the job easier by opening up the silo.
About 50 firefighters from Dixfield, East Dixfield, Mexico, Peru and Rumford responded, along with Med-Care Ambulance.
