Winthrop Red Sox 20 Bethel Athletics 6

WINTHROP — The Winthrop Red Sox and Bethel Athletics combined for 37 hits Sunday with the Sox coming out on top with a 20-6 victory. After spotting Bethel a run in the top of the first inning, Winthrop got things started with consecutive singles from lead-off hitter Mike House and Matt McCarthy. Following a walk to Dave Ricker Jr., Bob Cochran lined a bases-clearing triple to left, one of his three hits in the game, to put the Sox up 3-1. Winthrop exploded for 9 more runs in the bottom of the sixth as Matt Richardson contributed a bases-clearing triple of his own to right center. The Monmouth pitching trio of Eric Palleschi, Richardson and Brett Witherell combined to scatter 13 hits, with Palleschi picking up the win bny throwing 6 2/3 innings. Bethel’s Jason Rosenburg suffered the loss. Josh Alyward and Rick Whitney led the A’s with 3 hits apiece with Wade Osgood and Andy Whitney repeating as well. Winthrop’s Ricker, Ian McCarthy, M. McCarthy, Josh Nichols and Witherell all had three hits, while Dave Ricker Sr. and House each added a pair of hits. The Red Sox improve to 9-1 on the season while the A’s drop to 4-5.
