United Soccer Academy

AUBURN — The United Soccer Academy 2009 will take place at the Lewiston-Auburn Youth Soccer Association fields located behind the Auburn Middle School from July 27-31. This teaching academy is for students from age 5-17. the 5-7 year olds will participate from 9-11:30 a.m. The older players will participate from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Director Mike McGraw would like all those attending to be at the LAYSA Fields between the times of 8:30-9 to check in. New this year is a special rate for five or more players from the same high school who register as a team. That rate is a substantial savings. Individual tuition is $145.00. As a team each player pays $120.00.

The United Soccer Academy is coached by local high school soccer coaches as well as Eric Wagner, men’s varsity coach at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. Eric has led the Garnet to prominence in the Colonial League and has been selected for the NCAA Div III tournament for three consecutive years. Also on hand will be goal keeper specialist “Butch” Dow, who has traditional training from the SoccerPlus Keeper training schools run throughout the United States.

Players should bring conventional soccer wear, which includes soccer foot wear, and shin guards. Each player must have a well-marked soccer ball. Players must bring a water bottle. Sun block and a gear bag is recommended. Those who are there for the whole day will have to bring their own lunch in addition to a mid-morning snack.

Students may obtain a registration form at the Lewiston High School main office or contact Mike McGraw at 782-4339 or by e-mail at mmcgraw@lewistonpublicschools.org. Players may also register on site at 8:30 a.m. on July 27.

AK League 12 U Softball Tournament

TURNER — The AK League 20th anniversary season-ending tournament will be played Friday through Sunday, July 17-19, eekend at Stinchfield in Leeds, near the shores of the Androscoggin.

The round-robin games begin Friday at 6 p.m. and continues through Saturday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at Stinchfield in Leeds. A volunteer-run snack shack will serve food. Sunday will feature an all-star game at Tripp Middle School with players chosen from the teams that participated at the tournament.

Organizers ask that fans come early for lunch and cheer and support the all-star players. All games will proceed in light rain.
