BAXTER STATE PARK (AP) – A hiker who broke her leg in Maine’s Baxter State Park has made it to a hospital two days after park rangers began trying to help her down Mount Katahdin.
Authorities say 22-year-old Ashley Dewitt of Steuben fell while descending Hamlin Peak on Friday afternoon or early evening. Park rangers carried up tents and other gear, and after spending a rainy Friday night with her, began carrying Dewitt down on Saturday. The team reached a ranger station at nightfall Saturday, and an Army National Guard helicopter flew Dewitt to a hospital early Sunday morning.
The evacuation team included park personnel, volunteer search and rescue organizations and workers from Acadia National Park, the Maine Forest Service and the state fisheries and wildlife department.
