TOPSHAM — Midcoast Youth Theater will present the musical comedy “All Shook Up,” performed by a singing and dancing cast of local teens.

Combining story lines and dialogue from Shakespeare with the rock ‘n’ roll songs of Elvis Presley might seem incongruous, but playwright Joe DiPietro knew that the romance and fun of Elvis’ music was a great fit for the themes and characters of the Bard’s romantic comedies.

The show is set in 1950s America, but the plot is filled with Shakespearean devices like mistaken identity, romantic confusion and magical events.

Small-town mechanic Natalie (Mackenzie Bowerman) toils at the local garage, dreaming of escape to more exciting horizons. When leather-jacketed adventurer Chad (Christian Nadell) brings his motorcycle in for repair, Natalie decides to disguise herself as “Ed” to become his sidekick. Chad sticks around to stir up some excitement in the quiet little town, much to the dismay of Mayor Matilda (Sarah Cropley) and Sheriff Earl (Bryce Reed), who find themselves working overtime to control the ensuing chaos.

Characters include the town’s attractive museum keeper, Miss Sandra (Phoebe Tamminen), who is pursued by Chad — and also by Natalie’s widowed father, Jim (Nick Burich). But Miss Sandra is smitten with “Ed,” not realizing he’s really a she. Meanwhile, sassy bar owner Sylvia (Mary Montalvo) falls in love with Jim, and Sylvia’s daughter, Lorraine (Alesa Yuodsnukis), is drawn into a forbidden romance with the Mayor’s son, Dean (Michael Schuman). And then there’s Dennis (Alex Dolan), Natalie’s best friend, who is secretly in love with her.

Curtain times are 7 p.m. Thursday, July 30 and Friday, July 31; and 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Mt. Ararat High School.
