LIVERMORE FALLS — Selectmen have voted to approve a temporary parking order that set restrictions on portions of Main and Depot streets, Town Manager Jim Chaousis said Tuesday.

Prior to Monday’s public hearing, parking was limited to one hour on portions of Main and Depot streets. But due to new businesses moving into downtown, that restriction was not working for some businesses.

Parking will be limited to two hours between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. every day except Sundays and legal holidays, from Bridge Street on Main Street to the railroad tracks on Depot Street, Chaousis said.

The temporary parking order will be enforced by the Police Department as manpower allows.

Chaousis said he and police Chief Ernest Steward Jr. would come up with a way to enforce the parking order. There will be periodic checks to make sure people are following the limits, Chaousis said.
A fine of $5 will be assessed for those violating the order, he said.

The temporary parking order will expire on June 30, 2010. Chaousis is hoping a new parking ordinance will be ready by then.

There were a lot of comments on parking problems Monday night in other areas of town, he said. The parking order was an intermediate step, he said.

The board focused on the order, but work will continue on the parking ordinance.

Chaousis said he expected the ordinance to address those problem areas.
