LEWISTON —Healthy Androscoggin will hold the annual Get Fit and Win final celebration on Wednesday, July 29, at Bates College. The celebration will start at 5:30 p.m. at the amphitheater next to Lake Andrews.

Prizes include $500, $250 and $100 cash, plus, there will be many prizes given away that were donated by local businesses.

As part of the eight-week program, participants were asked to set goals to increase their number of minutes and/or the intensity level of their exercise. This year 700 community members are taking part in the program, almost double last year.

Participants ranged in age from 4 to 82 and included seasoned and beginning exercisers from all over the region. Healthy Androscoggin sent periodic tips via e-mail or mail to suggest exercise sites, provide participants with online resources and connect them with active events in the community.

Get Fit and Win participants are asked to return their log sheet to Healthy Androscoggin before 10 a.m. Monday, July 27, to be eligible for prize giveaways at the celebration. In case of rain, it will be held at the Lewiston High School cafeteria. Use the gym lobby entrance to the left/east side of the school.

New this year was a Nordic walking program to help participants to try new ways to exercise. Each week throughout the program, Rita Myrick, Maine Cycle/Skier’s Edge and Nordic Walking LLC, led participants on a local trail walk and provided instruction.

Healthy Androscoggin is funded in part by the Fund for a Healthy Maine. The coalition has four main community goals: supporting tobacco-free lifestyles, increasing physical activity, promoting healthy eating and preventing substance abuse.
