LEWISTON — Sylvia Plourde of Lewiston has assumed the post of Rotary International district governor for 2009-2010. As governor, Plourde will coordinate the community and international service projects of the 52 District 7790 Rotary Clubs in Maine and Quebec, Canada. She assumed office July 1 and will serve through June 30, 2010.

Plourde is one of 532 Rotarians worldwide serving as a district governor this year. A member of the Rotary Club of Lewiston-Auburn for 13 years, Plourde will also be responsible for organizing new clubs and strengthening existing ones.

During an installation ceremony in Trois Rivieres, Canada, on May 16, she said her main goals for the year are to be able to continue Rotary programs such as Rotary Youth Leadership Award, Group Study Exchange, Youth Exchange, Ambassadorial Scholarships and grants for community and international projects.

Area Rotary clubs are involved in many local and international service activities. The Rotary Club of Lewiston-Auburn awards seven $1,000 college scholarships to one senior high school student from seven of the area’s high schools. This past year, the club also awarded funds to local community organizations, including Museum L-A, Liberty Festival, Trinity Jubilee Center, the Franco-American Heritage Center and the Book Reach Program.

The Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club and other clubs in District 7790 also recently hosted a delegation of young professionals from Germany through the Group Study Exchange program.

Recently retiring after 30 years with Department of Labor’s Workforce Investment Board, Plourde, now a licensed realtor affiliated with ERA Worden Realty, looks forward to visiting all 52 Rotary Clubs in year 2009-2010. Plourde’s first official visit as district governor was to her home club on July 2 at the Ramada Inn.
