William L. Small

1915 – 2009

AUBURN – William L. Small, 94, passed away July 24, at Auburn Residential Care Home.

Bill was born June 10, 1915, at home in New Gloucester to Charles and Lena Yeaton Small. He Graduated from New Gloucester High School in 1932, and Bates College in 1936.

Bill was a teacher and coach at New Portland, Principal and teacher at Solon and teacher at Lebanon Academy and Pennell Institute of Gray. He served with the Navy in World War II (RDM), was a selectman in New Gloucester and treasurer of the school district. Bill was a member of the American Legion Gray Post 86 and family member of Camp Sunshine. He married Elizabeth Packard Small in 1940.

His hobbies included brook fishing, camping, baseball (Yankee fan)
dancing, walking, bowling, cribbage, beano, Yahtzee and Bible study.


He is survived by four daughters, Sylvia and husband, George Hamblet, Suzanne and husband, Thomas Anderson, Sherry and husband, Frank Lane and Sandra Kimball and fiancee, Dan Smith; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  

Bill was predeceased by his parents; wife, Bette; and sisters, Betty Hincks and Helen Hinckley; brothers, Charles, Elliott and Benjamin.
