100 years ago, 1909

While swimming in the canal near the Androscoggin Mill early last evening a 17-year-old was taken with cramps. After he had gone down twice his two brothers pulled him to the bank. Physicians worked over the lad for two hours but could not revive him.

Young Gagne went directly after supper with his brothers and a number of other young men to the canal for a swim. It is supposed he was taken with cramps caused by his going into the water too soon after eating his supper.

50 years ago, 1959

As the result of changes to the electrical system at Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport, runway and marker lights at the field are now lighted throughout the night. Announcement of the change was made yesterday by Auburn City Engineer Roscoe L. Clifford.

Clifford said the lights now come on automatically at dusk and remain on throughout the night. At dawn, when sufficient light is available for aircraft to land without the aid of artificial light, the lights go off automatically through the means of an electronic eye.

25 years ago, 1984

Albert L. Wrenn of Lisbon is the new personnel manager for Pineland Center in Pownal. The veteran of nearly 14 years of service with the Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation will be responsible for interpreting and administering collective bargaining agreements, personnel rules and laws, plus departmental and institutional policies on employment and management of payroll functions.
