WINTHROP – Overcoming a 30-minute rain delay and the arrival of a thick fog, Winthrop was able to slip past Rumford, 6-0, Sunday evening in a shortened, six-inning Pine Tree League baseball game.
The Red Sox pushed across a run in the bottom of the first inning on a Brett Witherell double. Winthrop (10-3) scored five more times in the third, with Matt McCarthy delivering a bases-loaded single for a pair of runs. The Cardinals (6-5) mustered only two hits on the night, off the bats of Jared Bernard and the legendary Bitsy Ionta.
Winthrop’s Torey Carr got the win on the hill. Mark Palmer took the loss. Witherell and Carr both were repeat hitters for the Red Sox.
