WILTON — A group of 10 young entertainers will present a free concert at the 27th annual Wilton Blueberry Festival set for Aug. 7 and 8.

The entertainers, ReCreation, were here a few years ago, said festival organizer Shannon Smith. They are coming back for a 7:15 p.m. concert on Aug. 7 inside the Nichols Expo Center.

Prior to the concert, the Farmington Emblem Club will conduct a flag-folding ceremony and two of Wilton’s own singers, Brook Lake and Taylor Kaminsky, will sing the national anthem.

The girls, ages 11 and 12, called Smith in February asking to sing the national anthem during this year’s festival, she said. Their parents gave their approval but told the girls they would have to make the arrangements themselves, and they did.

ReCreation is similar to Up With People, Smith said. According to their Web site, www.re-creationusa.com, the group focuses on entertaining veterans. It also performs for schools, fairs and other events throughout the United States.

Members of the Emblem Club heard the group in California a few years ago, Smith said. They were excited about the energetic singing and dancing and suggested Smith bring them here.

Their music is for all ages and includes singing, intricate dancing and glittering costumes. Founded in 1976, the group has performed in all 50 states.

Other highlights of the two-day festival include Saturday’s 9 a.m. parade featuring well over 100 entries. Crafters and live entertainment are scheduled at the Nichols Expo Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and following the parade to 4 p.m.
on Saturday.

One special activity started last year is expected to increase this year, she said. The baby and toddler derby race attracted 23 babies and toddlers last year with expectations for 30 or 40 this year. Each entrant either walks or crawls specific distances, according to their division. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. Saturday with the contest starting at 1 p.m. at Kineowatha Park.

The fireworks display will begin around 9 p.m. on Saturday.
