Economic stimulus money will pay for 30 new police officers in Maine. Among the new positions funded by federal money are two new cops each in Auburn and Lewiston, according to Steve McCausland, spokesman for Maine Department of Public Safety. Towns that will get an additional officer include Fryeburg, Mexico and Norway, McCausland wrote in a release.
In all, $5 million in grants was awarded to 18 local police departments in Maine, compared to 63 Maine communities seeking $20 million for 116 new hires.
Maine State Police, who asked for money to hire five new troopers over three years, did not receive money, McCausland said.
