LEWISTON — A Massachusetts man accused of firing a gun on Oak Street, stripping off his clothes and running into a downtown mosque late Tuesday remained in jail a day later.
Kaya Simions, 22, of Peabody, Mass., was being held at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn on $15,000 bail. Simions, said to have been living at various locations in Lewiston, was charged with aggravated reckless conduct, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
At about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, neighbors in the area of 127 Oak St. called police to report what sounded like gunshots. Witnesses said a man had fired a gun into the air near that building before running away as police responded.
Several officers chased Simions across the downtown until he was found hiding in a basement at the mosque on Lisbon Street, police said. Simions was said to have no affiliation with the mosque.
Investigators on Wednesday were still attempting to determine why Simions allegedly fired the gun near the apartment house on Oak Street.
