MECHANIC FALLS — Five police agencies responded to a trailer park on Purington Avenue on Friday after a man wanted on warrants for unpaid fines holed up in his home.

Mechanic Falls Officer James Avery said he went to the trailer park to serve two warrants on Joseph Chase, 21, for unpaid fees and fines for prior convictions of eluding an officer and operating after license revocation. As Avery approached Chase’s home, Chase saw Avery outside “and then ran back into the residence and stayed in there, which ended up creating a police standoff,” Avery explained.

Avery said police began communicating with Chase using the public address announcer in the cruiser, and “convinced Joseph to talk to us on the telephone.”

More than an hour later, Avery was able to convince Chase to give himself up, and he “came out of the residence peacefully.”

Chase was not armed.

He was charged with creating a police standoff, which is a civil crime, and transported to the Androscoggin County Jail. His bail was set at the amount of fines owed on the prior convictions. He was released Friday afternoon.

In addition to Avery, officers from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department, Oxford Police Department, Maine State Police and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency responded to the trailer park. Avery estimates six or seven law enforcement officers responded to his call for backup.
