Independent Billiards League preseason meeting
AUBURN – Independent Pocket Billiards League will hold a manadatory preseason meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, August 20 at New Auburn Social Club. All rosters and player fees aare due at that time. Rules will be discussed, so any possible changes must be discussed at this meeting.
The league seeks more teams to join the league. Last season featured 45 teams in six divisions. All new players and teams are welcome at the meeting. For more information, call Joe Walker at 333-1716.

Mountain bike race Sunday
RANGELEY – There will be a mountain bike event at 10 a.m. Sunday to benefit Rangeley Lakes Trail Center in Rangeley and Dallas Plantation.
The race will be a true back country event offering a mix of a fast-track gravel road, wide wooded trails and a challenging single track with narrow bridge crossings. Cougar Soccer Classic road race scheduled
FARMINGTON – The third-annual Cougar Soccer Classic 5-kilometer and 1-mile road races and 5-kilometer walk will be held this year on Friday, August 14.
Registration for the events will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Whistlestop Rail Trail parking lot off Oakes Street in West Farmington. The walkers will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the kids’ 1-mile run for ages 15-and-under at 5:40 p.m. The 5K race will begin at 6 p.m. The event will be held on the Whistlestop Rail Trail, a flat, firmly packed gravel surface. Proceeds will benefit the boys’ and girls’ soccer programs at Mt.Blue High School.
Awards for the top finishers in several age groups will be presented in both races, and raffle prizes will be drawn for the walkers. A limited number of t-shirts are available. ‘Big EL’ softball tourney
FARMINGTON – The sixth-annual “Big El” Softball Tournament will be held Saturday, Sept. 12. This is a benefit tournament in honor of Elwood Harris, who supported youth baseball and men’s softball as a coach for more than 25 years.
This is a one-pitch tournament. You are allowed either slow pitch or modified pitch. The entry fee is $125 per team. Entry fees must be paid in advance unless special arrangements are made with tournament officials.
Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third place. Proceeds from the tournament will go to Umbagog Dialysis Center and a scholarship at Mt. Blue High School. There is a 12-team limit so please enter as soon as possible.

Special Olympics golf tourney at Maple Lane
LIVERMORE – Jay AMVETS Special Olympics Committee announces the second-annuaal Colin Richard Memorial golf scramble and pig roast to benefit Franklin County Special Olympians. The scramble is scheduled for Sept. 19 at Maple Lane Golf Course.
Event sponsors will help keep the region’s Special Olympics athletes active with bowling, dancing and skiing while preparing them for the annual games at Mt. Blue High School. The organizers are seeking $50 hole sponsors and donations of prizes for golfers. Debevoise tennis tournament
SOUTH PORTLAND – The 28th-annual Pete Debevoise Memorial tennis tournament is set for the weekend of August 15 and 16 at South Portland High School courts. The tournament honors the memory of South Portland’s longtime coach who was instrumental in the development of junior tennis in Maine and was named National Interscholastic Tennis Coach of the Year in 1976.

Mt. Blue youth football registration
FARMINGTON – Mt. Blue Area Youth Football will conduct fall registration for any child entering third through eighth grade living in the SAD 9 area Sunday, August 16 at Kemp Field. Times are 1 to 3 p.m. for Grades 7-8 and 3 to 5 p.m. for Grades 3-6. Signups will be for both the instructional camp that runs from 5 to 7 pm. August 17-20 and the regular fall season which begins practice at 5 p.m. August 24.

Ice Dawgs hockey tryouts
LEWISTON – The Lewiston Ice Dawgs middle school hockey team will hold tryouts at 6:50 p.m. Sept. 11 at Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
The Ice Dawgs play in the Southern Maine Middle School Tier I league. This is the team’s fifth season in that league. Any boy or girl in grades six through eight attending any school in Lewiston or Sabattus is eligible to try out. Please pre-register online with USA Hockey and bring a copy of that registration receipt to the tryout.
The season will consist of approximately 16 games with regular practices. There will be a non-refundable $20 fee due at tryouts. The Ice Dawgs also are taking names for possible volunteers during the season. MBNation fall hoop league open
SACO – MB Nation (formerly Maine Hoops) announces its 14th-annual fall basketball league. Last year the league consisted of more than 70 teams from across Maine and New Hampshire.
Four weeks of regular-season weekend play begin Oct. 3-4, with playoffs starting Nov. 1. Teams are guaranteed nine games, with most contests played Sundays. Divisions are boys’ and girls’ Grade 7-8, boys’ and girls’ Grade 9-10, boys and girls’ varsity aand girls’ JV.
