WINTHROP – Jim Morris pitched five strong innings and Matt McCarthy and Dave Ricker Jr. delivered key hits to propel the Winthrop Red Sox past the Downeast Dodgers, 7-3, in Pine Tree League senior baseball.
McCarthy lined a two-run single with two out in the third inning to break a scoreless tie. Ricker followed suit with another two-out, two-run single in the seventh. Ricker also scored when the right fielder mishandled the ball and it rolled to the fence.
Brett Witherell pitched two scoreless innings of relief for Winthrop. Downeast scratched out three runs in the ninth against Torey Carr on RBI singls by Harry Dwyer and Dennis Mancini.
Downeast’s Grady Ragsdale took the loss. McCarthy (three singles) and Eric Palleschi (two singles) were the only repeat hitters of the game, both for the Red Sox.
