FARMINGTON — This year’s Nordica Day recitalist is mezzo-soprano Alexandra Dietrich of Freeport. Nordica Day, Aug. 17, is the date world-famous operatic diva Lillian Nordica performed in her hometown of Farmington in 1911 for the final time.

One way the Nordica Memorial Association celebrates this day is to sponsor a recital by an up-and-coming singer from Maine. Diedrich received the Nordica Memorial scholarship this past April at an audition held by the Maine chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

The recital will be at 7:30 p.m. in Nordica Auditorium in Merrill Hall on the University of Maine at Farmington campus.

A graduate of the University of Southern Maine with a degree in music performance, Dietrich has appeared throughout the area in a variety of operatic roles and at oratorio concerts. This summer, she has returned to perform in the PORTopera Maine’s Emerging Artist program and was a featured soloist at the Independence Pops Concert Series with the Portland Symphony. A student of David Goulet for 10 years, Dietrich will enter a graduate program at Longy School of Music. Her accompanist will be Jesse Lynch.

Admission is free. Refreshments will be served in the hall after the concert. For more information, call the Nordica Homestead Museum at 778-2042.
