Helen F. Small Buttrick
1923 – 2009
BOWDOIN — Helen Frances Small Buttrick, 85, resident of Dead River Road in Bowdoin, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, at her residence surrounded by her family after a long illness.
She was born Oct. 1, 1923, in Bowdoin, a daughter of Harold J.W. and Susie M. (Wright) Small Sr. She was educated in Bowdoin and graduated from Litchfield Academy, Class of 1940.
She spent her life raising and caring for her family. She had been an active member of the West Bowdoin Baptist Church, the Cackle Club and the local Grange Hall. She was also a member of the Bowdoin Fire Auxiliary and the Bowdoin Historical Society and was an active fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. While living with her family in Eliot, she was an active member of the Marshwood Hawks Booster Club.
She enjoyed spending free time playing bingo; birdwatching in her yard; traveling with friends and family, especially to Atlantic City with her sisters; spending time in her gardens; but, mostly enjoyed spending time being a mother and grandmother, doting on her family in every way she could.
Survivors include her daughters, Susan D. and her husband, David Grimaldi, of Falmouth and Phyllis V. and her husband, Jerry Smith, of Bowdoin; a son, Daniel H. and his wife, Dianne (Merrill) Buttrick, of Berwick; six sisters, Mary Young of Bowdoin, Laura Owen of Fairfield, Calif., Evelyn and her husband, Ludger Tremblay, Irene Faye Davis, Alberta Greenleaf, Patricia and her husband, Ranleigh Elwell, all of Bowdoin; a brother, Harold J.W. and his wife, Ethel Small Jr. of Bowdoin; seven grandchildren, Jessica Vickerson and her partner, Craig Wetmore, of Cumberland, Carl and his wife, Lauren Vickerson, of Cumberland, Daric and his wife, Kali Buttrick, of Eliot, Dustin and his wife, Sarah Buttrick, of Portsmouth, N.H., Daryl Buttrick of Santa Monica, Calif., Michael Smith and his fiancé, Danielle Clarke, of Bowdoin and Ashley Grimaldi of Hampton, N.H.; great-grandchildren, Nicolas Colamaria, Mya Vickerson, Is’bella Buttrick, Alex and Schuyler Wetmore; and many well loved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 41 years, Harry Bruce Buttrick in 1989; and a brother, Joel Small in 1964.
