AUBURN – Despite being out-hit nine to six, the Winthrop Red Sox still doubled up the Auburn White Sox, 10-5, Sunday in a Pine Tree League baseball battle at Pettengill Park.
Leading 4-3 going into the top of the seventh inning, Winthrop (13-3) took advantage of an error, a pair of walks and RBI singles from Eric Palleschi, Matt Richardson and Josh Nichols to plate six runs and take a commanding 10-3 lead.
Auburn (7-7) loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning but were only able to score one run on a sacrifice fly by Sean Andrews. The White Sox also loaded the bases in the third, fourth and ninth innings but were unable to come up with the big hits, leaving 10 runners in scoring position on the day.
Dan Coleman and Jim Wacenske of the White Sox were the only repeat hitters in the game.
The regular season came to an end this weekend, with the Red Sox finishing in second place and the White Sox sixth in the 11-team league. The playoffs get underway Sunday, August 16.
