NEWRY — A Rumford man was listed in serious condition Sunday night at Central Maine Medical Center following an afternoon motorcycle crash on Route 26 in Newry.

Theodore Hotham, 63, of Rumford, was transported by medical helicopter following the 4:31 p.m. accident. No information was available about his passenger, Nancy Hotham, 65, also of Rumford.

Cpl. Justin Brown of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office reported Sunday that the crash remains under investigation. Brown said witnesses at the scene indicated that Hotham drifted off the right-hand side of the road and went down a steep embankment before crashing into a tree.

“There’s no apparent cause for it,” Brown said. “The motorcycle just drifted off the road and down the embankment.”

Brown said that Hotham had already been transported from the scene prior to arrival, but that emergency personnel said he suffered internal injuries. They also indicated that Hotham was found about 10 feet from the motorcycle. He said that both occupants were wearing helmets, but the couple was also thrown from the motorcycle.
