LEWISTON — Healthy Androscoggin held its ninth annual Get Fit and Win Final Celebration on July 29. More than 230 attended the event held at Lewiston High School to celebrate exercise successes and in hopes of being one of the big winners of cash prizes.

The winners were Krissy Thompson of Auburn, $500; Marie M. Capone of Auburn, $250; Gail Hodgkins of Greene, $250; and Frances Stauffer of Auburn, $100. Many prizes donated by local businesses were given as well.

As part of the eight-week program, participants were asked to set goals to increase their number of minutes and/or the intensity level of their exercise. This year 700 community members took part in the program, almost double last year’s numbers. Participants ranged in age from 4 to 88 and included seasoned as well as beginning exercisers from all over the region.

Healthy Androscoggin sent periodic tips via e-mail or mail to suggest exercise sites, provide participants with online resources and connect them with active events in the community. Healthy Androscoggin offered free Nordic walks as another way to get exercise.

“I had never heard of Nordic walking before this program and was interested when I read that Nordic pole walking is a total body workout,” said participant, Louise Michaud. “After I tried it the first time, I found that I did get more of a workout than just walking, so I tried it the second week and I was hooked.” To find out more about Nordic walking, contact Rita Myrick, 754-9944 or rita@nordicwalkingllc.com.
