Summer social

WEST PARIS — The Finnish American Heritage Society of Maine will hold its annual membership summer social from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, at the Finnish-American Heritage Center, 8 Maple St.

Society speaker

PARIS — Ben Conant, curator of the Paris Cape Historical Society, will address the Thursday, Aug. 20, meeting of the society, speaking on his trip to Evanston, Ill. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the museum at 77 High St., South Paris.

Conant was invited to attend, with all expenses paid, the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the dedication of the library at Northwestern University in Evanston, just outside of Chicago. The event was sponsored by the heirs of James Deering, who funded the establishment of Moore Park in South Paris.

The public is invited to hear Conant speak of his experiences. Refreshments will be served following the meeting, at which all are welcome. 

Summer recess

WATERFORD — The Waterford Library bridge group will not meet in August. The regular schedule will resume on Monday, Sept. 28. No partner is necessary, and beginning and experienced players are welcome. It is an informal group where participants may learn from each other. For more information, call 583-2729.

Socrates meeting

WATERFORD — The Socrates Café will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at the Waterford Library. The group offers a forum to discuss current topics and ideas in a friendly atmosphere, where divergent views will be welcome. The theme will be “Facebook/My Space, or Face to Face: Is Technology Helping or Harming Personal Connection?”

Due to the Labor Day holiday, the meeting has been postponed from the regular practice of meeting on the first Monday of each month.
