WILTON — Western Maine Community Action plans to move its Customer Service Center from the leased space on Route 2 to its building on Church Street.

“We’re consolidating our space from three different locations in East Wilton and moving down to two,” said Fenwick Fowler, executive director of WMCA.

Built 20 years ago, the 20B Church St. building was formerly occupied by Community Concepts for Head Start, which left to develop its own location, he said.

With plans to make the move by mid-September, renovations are under way to make the fairly open space more accessible to customers, including client interview rooms. Sticking to its mission to help people be independent, a portion of the space will be designed for resources to help people be self-reliant, he said. The space will be similar to the entrance to the CareerCenter where clients can use computers and other materials.

The renovation also includes some energy conservation improvements.

“We’re sorry to leave the Route 2 location but we do think we can make this office space as pleasant and as easy a place for customers to come to as that office,” Fowler said.

The move requires review and a change-of-use permit from the town’s Planning Board because of the renovations and changing from day care to administrative offices, Code Enforcement Officer Paul Montague said.

The board will review the request at Thursday’s meeting at 7 p.m. at the town office.
