Performing Saturday, Aug. 22, as part of the L.L. Bean Summer Concert Series 2009 will be Maine songwriters Carol Noonan, Ellis Paul and Slaid Cleaves. Noonan is a contemporary singer-songwriter, but is also known for her haunting renditions of Irish, English and American traditionals. In 2006, she and her husband, Jeff Flagg, renovated a barn on their rural property in Brownfield and opened the Stone Mountain Arts Center. One of the leading voices in American songwriting, Paul was a principal leader in the wave of singer-songwriters to emerge from the Boston folk scene in the 1990s. Cleaves, who began his career singing on the streets in Cork, Ireland, where he attended college in 1985, summarizes his biography on his Web site with these 19 words: Slaid Cleaves. Grew up in Maine. Lives in Texas. Writes songs. Makes records. Travels around. Tries to be good. The free outdoor concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Discovery Park in Freeport. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.
