WILTON — Barclaycard US has been named one of the Best Places to Work in Maine for 2009.

Headquartered in Wilmington, Del., Barclaycard US opened a customer contact center in Wilton in April 2008. The local center employs 100 people who provide customer support services.

Companies across the state entered a two-part process for selection. In the first part, the company is evaluated on workplace polices and practices. The second part, making up 75 percent of the evaluation, is a survey that measures the employee experience.

The Best in Business program is designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Maine and is sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. The chosen businesses include 24 companies with 15-249 employees and seven large-sized businesses with 250-plus employees.

Barclaycard US will be recognized and honored at an awards ceremony Oct. 13 and will be profiled in a special publication by Mainebiz. Their final ranking among the 24 businesses will be announced at the event.

Barclaycard expressed appreciation of its Maine employees.

“We’re very happy with the work force in central Maine. The folks have experience in the service and hospitality industry. It’s a great background for our call center,” said Kevin Sullivan from the company headquarters in Delaware.

The Delaware site received a similar honor, Best in Business 2009, based on employee response, he said. Part of that is the working culture the company has built, he said.

“We look for people who work together and value people who like to achieve but also value how they get the job done . . . in a friendly, teamwork way,” he said.

Another important aspect is the company’s approach to taking ownership in the community is encouraging employees to volunteer in their communities. During the past year, local Barclaycard employees have contributed 1,369 volunteer hours in the community.

“We’re thrilled to be recognized as a Best Place to Work in Maine especially in our first year of eligibility,” said Jen McEntee, director of the Wilton Care Center. Company consideration for the honor requires at least 15 employees working in Maine, the facility being in Maine and being in business for at least one year.
