LEWISTON — The Androscoggin River is one of Maine’s major waterways. It has been the lifeblood of surrounding communities since people first inhabited the region. While past harmful practices polluted the river, the waterway and its surrounding community have undergone a major regeneration over recent years.

To celebrate the natural and man-made environment along the river, the Androscoggin Land Trust has partnered with L/A Arts to create an exhibit of fine artwork titled “River Ways.”

Artists from all over Maine were invited to share their artistic perceptions of this integral resource.

On Friday, Aug. 28, the public is invited to the opening reception of “River Ways” at L/A Arts Gallery 5 at 49 Lisbon St. Many of the participating artists will attend the 5 p.m. reception, as well as representatives of several major environmental agencies.

“This is not just an art exhibit,” said Andrew Harris, executive director of L/A Arts. “It’s a celebration of our community and our environment. While there are many beautiful places in Maine, I think the Androscoggin River with its Great Falls and stunning presence, along with its integral impact in shaping this community, needs to be recognized as equally inspiring.”

Several associated events are being planned in connection with “River Ways,” including a community reception on Oct. 2 and a harvest dinner gala and auction on Oct. 16, which also commemorates the Androscoggin Land Trust’s 20th anniversary.

“River Ways” will be on exhibit through Oct. 14. Gallery hours are 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; and 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and by appointment by calling L/A Arts at 782-7228.
