LEWISTON — Lewiston Adult Education has several opportunities this fall for adults to earn credit toward a high school credential and prepare for college.

Algebra and chemistry, both of which count as college and nursing school prerequisites, as well as credit toward the high school diploma, will be offered. Algebra will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays for 15 weeks, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 1. Chemistry will meet from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays for 15 weeks, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 2.

For those who would like to build algebra problem-solving skills that will apply to everyday life and work situations, Applied Algebra will be offered. The class will participate in hands-on labs where they will use algebra to help them choose cell phone plans, optimize employment payment options and evaluate other everyday financial situations. Applied Algebra will meet from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays for 15 weeks, beginning Sept. 1.

A writing workshop will be offered to help participants improve writing skills using exercises in grammar, revision and editing. The course will offer one-half a credit toward the high school diploma. The workshop” will meet from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday for eight weeks, beginning Oct. 19.

U.S. History classes will help students examine major themes in the last century of American history The course will count for credit toward the high school diploma. It will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays for 15 weeks, beginning Sept. 2.

Free support and skill-refresher programs are available for adults transitioning to college. The college transitions program offers flexible meeting times to accommodate adults with different schedules as they prepare to enroll in a college degree program. The “Transitions to College and Careers: Health Care Edition” is available for adults interested in earning a college degree to advance a career in health care.
