MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – A sex offender who prosecutors considered keeping locked up beyond his sentence but was released in 2007 has been charged with rape and burglary.

Fifty-three-year-old William DeCato of Manchester was arrested after a woman told police she was awakened by a man who forced her to have sex with him.

The New Hampshire Union Leader says bail for DeCato was set at $1 million. He faces seven felony charges.

DeCato spent eight years in prison after pleading guilty to trying to rape an exotic dancer. Prosecutors considered detaining him under a law intended to keep dangerous sexual predators jailed after their prison terms. Merrimack County Attorney Dan St. Hilaire said at that time that the state withdrew its petition because it didn’t have “clear and convincing” evidence to have him civilly committed.
