Stephen C. Woodard

SKOWHEGAN — Stephen C. Woodard, 59, of Skowhegan passed away Monday, Aug. 24, at his home, after a long illness.

Steve was born in Lewiston, April 7, 1950, the son of Harry and Janette (Talcott) Woodard. He attended Auburn schools and graduated from Edwards Little High School in 1968. He worked for the United States Postal Service for 36 years, serving in a multitude of positions until his eventual retirement in 2005.

He married Joanne Marie Parent on Sept. 24, 1977 and had one son, James. Work brought him to Skowhegan where the family has resided for the past 29 years. Certainly anyone who knew him was well aware of how much Joanne and Jim meant to him.

He had a few passions in life most notably spectator sports, especially thoroughbred horse racing which he avidly followed either in person or television. He enjoyed traveling very much and also enjoyed the companionship of his dogs throughout his life, Rex, Jake, Rocky and Max.

He was a past member of Tranquil Lodge 29 of Auburn and Kora Temple Shrine of Lewiston, as well as a member of the National Association of Postmasters, serving as state of Maine president. He also was a fund raiser for Maine March of Dimes and the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, State of Maine Special Olympics as well as other fundraising organizations.

He will be remembered by his family and many close friends, including Joanne, his wife for more than 31 years: his son, Jim of Skowhegan; his “daughter,” Agneta Lofgren of Tullinge, Sweden, whom Joanne and Steve had as an exchange student in 1984; his parents of Auburn; as well as brother, Brian and sister-in-law, Susan of Kingston, N.Y.; several important family members, Jackie Arnold of Sabattus, Pauline Gauthier of Turner, Linda Gauthier of Auburn, Faith Stevens and her three children, Ashley, Caleb and Abigail of Canton, Connie Bernier and children, Nancy and David of Lewiston, Linda, Gary and Jennifer Denonville of Greene, Donald and Ginny Parent of Greene and daughter, Trina of Lewiston, Susan Chasse of Lisbon, her daughters, Stacey of Lisbon and Jessie of Monmouth, Tom, Amy and Jack Woodard of Somerset, N.J., and Jeff and Jessica Woodard of Frisco, Texas; he also leaves many close friends not only in Skowhegan and the surrounding area but in the Lewiston-Auburn area as well as friends in the postal service throughout the state, in addition, friends from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Virginia, New York, Maryland, Michigan and South Carolina.

He was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Jeannette Picard of Lewiston; nephews, Ricky Gauthier of Lewiston and Eric Denonville of Greene; brother-in-law, Joseph Gauthier of Lewiston; and both maternal and paternal grandparents, Eben and Nellie Talcott of Auburn and Harry and Mamie Woodard of Lewiston.
