OXFORD — The Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District has announced that Ag Education Day at the Oxford County Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Education Day is free to any school (public or private) in Oxford County and involves having many presentations on the grounds. Elementary students in kindergarten through second grade can learn about natural resource conservation and agriculture and how it is important to all.

Registration is required. Call or e-mail the conservation district office by phoning 743-5789, ext. 101, or by e-mailing jane.heikkinen@me.nacdnet.net by Thursday, Sept. 10, with grade level and number of students.

Three formal one-half hour sessions have been added with student activities that meet the Learning Results criteria using Ag in the Classroom, Project Learning Tree and Project Wet programs. There will be many stations throughout the fairgrounds.

Some stations will focus on food and producing a product (such as shucking and grinding corn for bird food, beekeeping for honey and apple peeling to prepare for pies or sauce). Other activities will include working with tools, like nailing boards, using scales to weigh animals or students and rolling dough for pie crust. Other stations will focus on products coming from animals and other natural resources used in daily living.
