100 years ago, 1909

Work will begin at once on the new hall for Thorne’s Corner Grange. The building will be located at the corner of the three roads at Thorne’s Corner. It will be 72 by 38 feet and will have two stories and a basement. Thorne’s Corner Grange was organized May 26, 1909, and in less than six months has increased from 51 to over 100 members. The building committee for the new hall consists of Lemuel Temple, H. O. Wood and George Field.

50 years ago, 1959

Fanned by strong winds, a raging brush and woods fire burned over about 15 acres in the Garcelon Bog area of Lewiston yesterday afternoon, threatening scores of homes before hard-pressed firefighters from four communities checked the flames.

Lewiston Fire Chief, Roland G. Dumais, who led a small army of firemen and Civil Defense personnel against the fast-spreading blaze said an unauthorized trash fire was responsible.

25 years ago, 1984

RUMFORD — Several Rumford Community Hospital employees are busy designing and constructing a streamlined hospital bed on wheels to be entered into the first annual Maine Mattress Marathon on Sept. 22 at the Lewiston Raceway.

The marathon, which will include 100 entries from across the state, will be the feature attraction of the first annual American Cancer Society Field Day sponsored by the Maine Division of ACS in cooperation with the Raceway, Top of the Track Inc., WBLM FM radio station, and the Southern Maine Racing Assn. with all proceeds to benefit the ACS.
