RUMFORD — Mountain Valley coach Jim Aylward was just hoping his Falcons would stay healthy and improve in the football game at Chet Bulger field.
The Falcons refused to buckle and took care of business in a Class B Campbell Conference tilt. Senior quarterback Chris Day threw three touchdown passes and and the Falcons remained unbeaten with a 41-0 win over Fryeburg Academy.
Mountain Valley (5-0) overcame a self-proclaimed slow start before getting its offense going. The Falcons had taken a 20-0 halftime lead, but Day sealed the deal by throwing scoring strikes to Jesse Bates and Tyler Mason for 33 and 32-yards, respectively. In the last three games, the Falcons have out scored the Raiders 139-6.
“We did start slow, but adjustments were not needed to get things going,” Day said. “In the second half, we picked up our intensity. It’s easy playing quarterback when the line blocks and the receivers run their routes.”
On the initial possession of the third quarter, Fryeburg QB Jason Stefano was sacked by Falcon end Christian and were forced to punt . Falcon defense have allowed 20 points in 2009.
“We had way too many mental mistakes,”Aylward said. “We’ll keep working on those.”
The Falcons started at their own 32 and Matt Duka (111 yards, 14 rushes) broke loose for 37 yards. On the next play, Bates beat the coverage and Day (five of seven for 135 yards, three TDs) lofted a high arching spiral in to the end zone.
Fryeburg turned the ball over on downs in Falcon territory and Day threw a scoring strike to Mason. In the first quarter, Mason (122 yards, six rushes) received a block from Ryan Laubauskas and sprinted 54 yards for a TD.
Fryeburg has two excellent weapons in Stefano and Conor Tweedie (51 yards rushing) and utilized the tandem, well. Stefano (71 yards,14 rushes) benefited from his running from the shotgun. But Stefano (seven of 14 for 83 yards) was intercepted twice by Cole Clark.
“Fryeburg is a good team,” Duka said. “In order to be successful, we knew we had to shutdown the two headed monster of Stefano and Tweedie.”
MV fullback Brady Fergola (fumble recovered) caught a pass in the right flat, received a Mason block and ran a 38-yard TD on the first drive of the game. The Falcons used the line of Laubauskas, Steven Jeselskis, Nick Taylor, center Ryan Glover and Clark opened up huge holes.
“We did bend a little on defense,”Laubauskas said, the 286-pound tackle lined up as a FB and scored a 20-yard TD. “We were not playing fundamentally sound defense.”
Jacob Arsenault kicked four extra points. Tim Ross rushed for a 23-yard TD.
“I would like us to just stay focused for 48 minutes,”Aylward said. “We didn’t have any penalties tonight. My father would say that’s not a good thing as it shows we were not aggressive.”
