LEWISTON — Local religious leaders, academics and workers will gather today, Oct. 7, at L-A College for a forum to discuss the Employee Free Choice Act and how workers can shape the future economy through better wages, job security, health care and other benefits.

The forum will take place from 4:30 to 6:15 p.m. at Lewiston-Auburn College, Multi-Purpose Room 170.

The Employee Free Choice Act is pending in Congress and is expected to be debated late this year or in early 2010. If passed, the legislation would make it easier for employees to unionize.

The event is open to the public

Panelists will include Prof. Michael Hillard of the Department of Economics at the University of Southern Maine, Rabbi Hillel Katzir of Temple Shalom Synagogue in Auburn, Father Michael Seavey of Portland, Father Konstantine Sarantidis of Portland, Michelle Crocker, an IBEW 1837 worker who resides in Litchfield, and Shianne Valenzuela, an IBEW Local 567 electrician apprentice.
