THOMASTON — They raised their hands because they were sure.
The Lisbon boys’ soccer team put an exclamation point on securing its postseason berth Tuesday. The Greyhounds, clinging to one of the final tourney spots in Western B, celebrated an overtime victory at Georges Valley and a confirmed playoff appearance with a 2-1 victory.
“We were kind of in,” said Lisbon coach Dan Sylvester. “We were ahead of Mountain Valley by one or two points. I think we had kind of solidified the eighth spot, but with this win, we kind of hope it moves us up to sixth or seventh.”
The Greyhounds finished at 9-6 and did so in fine fashion. Lisbon watched the Bucs dominate the first half and battle back to tie the game in the second half. The Greyhounds responded with a strong second half and overtime to avenge a loss to the Bucs earlier in the season. Georges Valley, which was ranked fifth in Western C, finished at 9-4-1.
“It’s a huge win for us because we weren’t really solid in our playoff position,” said senior midfielder Phil Carville. “This really helps because this team is worth a lot of points.”
Carville produced the game-winner with 2:21 left in the first five-minute overtime. He took a pass from Cam Blouin on the left side and moved in for a long-distance shot from the wing. Georges Valley keeper Alec Young made a diving attempt for the ball, but it sailed over his head and outstretched hand.
“I just dribbled down the line a little bit more,” said Carville. “I chipped in the ball and got lucky when it went over his head. I was trying to put it far post so if it didn’t go into the goal, somebody else could be there for the header.”
Senior forward Marcus Bubar had the other goal for Lisbon while keeper Ethan Audie had a superb outing with 20 saves as the Bucs outshot Lisbon 35-22.
“We were talking at halftime that this is like a playoff game for us,” said Sylvester. “Georges Valley definitely outplayed us in the first half. We sat back on our heels a little bit.”
Both teams had plenty of scoring chances in the opening half. Bubar had a nice couple of bids and he set up Ryan Fairbanks for a shot. The Bucs Ketch Cowan, who had the game-winner at Lisbon, had pair of chances while Drew Townsend missed two quality shots late in the half.
The scoreless tie continued early in the second half thanks to a stellar defensive play from Joe Osmond, who saved a goal when he cleared a shot off a Buc’s corner kick.
The Greyhounds took the lead with 28:40 left in regulation when Bubar beat a defender and caught Young coming out of the net too far. He chipped it by the keeper before he could recover.
“We started going to the ball,” said Sylvester of Lisbon’s stronger second-half play. “They beat us to the ball in the first half. The second half people started picking things up.”
After 18 shots in the first half, the Bucs had only 10 and only a few were real quality tries. It was a play with 15:30 left that tied the game. Cowan beat a defender on the left wing and put a shot on net. Audie made the save but Cy McGeady was there to put in the rebound.
“After they scored and tied it, we came back and really played well as a team,” said Carville. “It makes you want to fight back and get gritty and get back on top where we were before in the game.”
Lisbon had a chance off a dead ball with 3:37 left by Tyler Dupal, but overtime soon followed. Lisbon had a couple of opportunities early when Bubar had a low shot that just went wide to the left. He then set up Carville for a shot off a cross.
The Greyhounds did a nice job adjusting its play in the midfield late in the game. Lisbon was able to win the ball more effectively than it did in the first half and feed the offensive push up front. That was what led to the game-winner. Blouin won the ball in the midfield and sent it forward for Carville. He had fellow Greyhounds charging the goal just in case.
“I just tried to put it far post,” said Carville. “I wasn’t really shooting, but I was just lucky and it went in.”
