HANOVER — About 20 residents Tuesday night approved a 2009-10 municipal budget of $189,635, or about 12 percent less than the current year’s budget.
They also honored town librarian, Peg Susbury, as Volunteer of the Year.
Town Clerk Clem Worcester said townspeople also approved a revised Comprehensive Plan that replaces the original document written in 1974. The new plan incorporates a variety of state and town land use, subdivision, shoreland and floodplain ordinances.
Elected to another three-year term as selectman was Brenda Lee Gross, who is the current board chairman, as well as Worcester to the one-year positions as town clerk, tax collector and treasurer.
Bethel state Rep. Jarrod Crockett, R-Bethel, served as moderator.
Susbury, a summer Howard Pond resident, has served as volunteer librarian since the Gardner Roberts Memorial Library was moved from the Howard Pond Road to its current site adjacent to the town office. She has organized children’s activities and written grants to bring the century-old building up to date.
“She never runs out of ideas. We wanted her to know how much we appreciate her and how well she has maintained the library,” Worcester said.
Her name will be etched in a plaque on display in the town office with other Volunteers of the Year. She received a plaque in her honor.
Worcester said road work drew the most comments from those who attended the annual event. The amount of money raised last year for road work was $22,000 more than this year’s $30,000. Worcester said the town had carryover funds so that several projects will be completed this fall. Among those are a dangerous curve on the South Shore Road and additional work on the Davis Road. Funds were also set aside in a capital project account for future road work, such as on the lower portion of the Howard Pond Road.
Whether the current tax rate of $7.15 per $1,000 valuation will be changed may be decided at a Board of Assessors meeting set for 6 p.m. Oct. 27. Tax bills will be mailed soon after the rate is determined.
