HEBRON — More than 130 people turned out at the Hebron Station School Friday night to raise nearly $800 for the Hebron Station School scholarship with a supper and raffle, according to Lydia Eusden, a teacher.

“I was very pleased,” Eusden said Monday of the almost two dozen families and scores of others who turned out at the school to enjoy a harvest supper and buy raffle tickets for two bicycles that were donated by Norway Savings Bank and Principal Tiffany Karnes.

A total of 21 families with four or more people and another 43 individuals attended the supper not including staff and Student Council members who helped at the supper, Eusden said.

“They were really the stars of the evening,” Eusden said of the student helpers. “They did it nicely.”

A total of $646 was made on the supper, that was also sponsored by the school’s PTA, and $126 on the raffle, that is still ongoing.

“It went fabulously,” Karnes said.

The fund was established by the teachers last year as a way to help a former Hebron Station School student further his or her education after high school graduation. Hebron Station School is one of several schools in the Oxford Hills School District whose teachers provide a scholarship to graduating students.

“Last year was the first year we were able to give a senior a scholarship for furthering their education. This was a big fundraiser,” Eusden said.

The scholarship recipient is determined by the Hebron Station School scholarship committee and the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School scholarship committee.

“This was so important to us because Hebron did not have one (a scholarship),” Eusden said. The scholarship was initiated last year through a $1,000 donation from a Hannaford fundraising program. “We wanted to give back to the students,” she said.

The supper, which included apple pie and spaghetti and appetizers made from local produce, was the result of a donation and volunteer help from Healthy Oxford Hills. Teachers were able to go to local growers and buy produce for the harvest supper. It was a way to try to further educating Hebron Station students about the importance of “buying locally,” Eusden said.

The teachers also do smaller fundraising events throughout the year including selling decorative Christmas stockings made by teachers.
