Malcolm A. Pohle
1928 – 2009

AUBURN — Malcolm A. Pohle, 81, of Kennebec Drive in Lisbon, formerly of Lisbon Falls and Inverness, Fla., passed away early Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Hospice House with family at his side.

He was born in Marblehead, Mass., on June 23, 1928, the son of Albert M. and Eleanor (Gagnon) Pohle. He was educated in Massachusetts schools. On Sept. 26, 1948, he was married in Marblehead, Mass., to the former Barbara Huntley. They soon settled in Lisbon Falls to raise their family.

He worked for 14 years as a foreman at Eastland Shoe in Freeport. He then moved on to the Freeport Country Club, maintaining and operating the facility from 1974 until his retirement in 1993. In addition to the Freeport Country Club, Malcolm was a member of the Maine State Golf Association, the Agronomy Superintendent’s Association of Maine, and the Lakeside Golf Club in Inverness, Fla.

He thoroughly enjoyed gardening and landscaping — and could most certainly appreciate a well-manicured property, including his own golf course. Some of his other favorite enjoyments were watching New England sports, Celtics, Patriots and Red Sox, and gaming — including playing cards and cribbage, and watching horse and dog racing. He also enjoyed cooking, especially Italian dishes. He derived great pleasure from watching family members excel in extra-curricular activities. He was a loving, devoted and hard-working husband, father and grandfather, and a good friend who will be missed dearly.

He leaves his wife of 61 years, Barbara Pohle, of Lisbon; his son, Richard (Rick) Pohle and his wife, Catherine, of Williamstown, Mass.; three daughters, Diane Fournier and husband, Normand, of Lisbon, Suzanne Morneau and husband, Denis, of Lisbon, and Cindy Smith and husband, Norman, of Auburn; eight grandchildren, Joey Pohle, Becky Pohle, Matina Lerette, Jessica Maloy,
Jennifer Theriault, Michelle Morneau, Kyle Smith and Kevin Smith; five great-grandchildren, Katelyn Lerette, Nicholas Lerette, Jordyn Maloy, Sophie Maloy and Mackenzie Theriault; a sister, Ann Stanley of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a brother, Richard Pohle of California; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Jean Hill, of Lisbon Falls.

The Pohle family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of the Marshwood Center, with special thanks to Dr. Austin and the staff of the Hospice House.
