Olavi E. Nurmi
1920 – 2009

MADISON — Olavi Eero Nurmi, 89, died Saturday, Nov. 7, at his home in Madison, with his wife, Susan, by his side.

Born in Palmer, Mass., he was the second of 13 children of the late John and Elsa Lehto Nurmi. The family moved to Maine when he was just an infant. After attending local schools, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he served during World War II.

He then studied in Boston and became an electrician. In 1948 he married Muriel Chamberlain of Canton. For several years they made their home in Connecticut, before retiring back to their beloved Canton home.

Besides his wife of nine years, Susan, Olavi is survived by his daughters, Evelyn Attenello and her husband, Rico, and Lucille Planka and her husband, Jim; granddaughter, Carol Kyllonen; great-granddaughter, Krystal Kyllonen; stepdaughter, Glenna Andjevsky; his brothers, Oiva of Otisfield, and Edwin of Pendleton, Ore.; sisters, Martha Flanigan and Barbara Payne of South Paris; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Muriel, to whom he was married for 48 years; a grandson, Rico Attenello Jr.; a stepson, Lawrence Young Jr.; brothers, John, William, Eugene, Taisto and Robert; and sisters, Irene Kimball, Selma Mills and Elsie Wade.
