PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – Officials say a Portland man facing charges he killed his girlfriend and then tried to kill himself is going to be held at the state of Maine’s Riverview Psychiatric Center.

Fifty-one-year-old William Hanaman made his first court appearance Wednesday on charges that he killed 47-year-old Marion Shea at his apartment.

The Portland Press Herald says attorneys agreed that Hanaman should be transferred from the Cumberland County jail to the psychiatric hospital in Augusta.

Deputy Attorney General William Stokes says Hanaman’s condition needs to be stabilized.

Shea’s body was found in Hanaman’s apartment on Nov. 11. Hanaman was found unconscious and surrounded by pills.
