AUBURN — Retired social worker and active grandfather James Tierney will engage grandparents in a discussion on the trials, tribulations and joys of raising grandchildren from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St.

Topics will include understanding normal child behavior, encouraging good behavior and building a healthy relationship between the parents and grandparents in the raising of the children.

“With both parents often working outside the home, finding healthy ways to involve grandparents in the nurture of children can be both a necessity and a challenge,” said Tierney. “Grandparents have the opportunity to make a useful contribution, even a vital one, in the raising of their grandchildren.”

Tierney has a master’s degree in social work from the University of Connecticut, 30 years of experience as a child welfare worker for the Department of Health and Human Services and is the grandfather of seven (soon to be eight) grandchildren.
