LEWISTON — On the weekend of Dec. 11-13, The Public Theatre will present its adaptation of “A Christmas Carol,” followed by “Songs of the Season,” a program of sing-along holiday songs performed by fiddler Jennifer Armstrong.
TPT’s original version of Dickens’ classic, written by TPT Artistic Director Christopher Schario in 1993, is performed by six actors and a fiddler. The acclaimed adaptation is now performed by theaters worldwide.
“We stay true to the heart of the story, while at the same time rejuvenating this familiar tale with humor and imagination,” Schario, who also directs the show. Much of Dickens’ original text is used, with six actors sharing narration and portraying multiple characters with the aid of a simple hat, cloak, robe and other accessories.
A live fiddler underscores the story with traditional Christmas music. A hand-cranked wind machine and a thunder sheet create a theatrical atmosphere.
Schario’s version begins with a child reading a copy of the Dickens’ novel. Five actors and a fiddler appear and slowly coax the child into joining the story and becoming the character of Tiny Tim.
Leading the cast will be JT O’Connor as Scrooge. He performed in the film and is pleased to be returning to TPT, where he has appeared in “The Nerd” and “Rough Crossing.”
New to the cast this season will be Lewiston native Madigan Leslie in the role of the child and Tiny Tim; and local actor Matt Delamater in the roles of Fred and jolly Christmas Present. Delamater appeared at TPT in last season’s production of “The Last Mass at St. Casimir’s.”
Also returning to the cast will be Sandra Blaney and Sheila Stasack, who performed in TPT’s recent production of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” They will portray Belle/Fan and Mrs. Cratchit/The Ghost of Christmas Past. In addition, Russell Berrigan will revive his role as Marley/Bob Cratchit. Emily Karelitz will round out the cast as the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.
Besides her encore role as the fiddler, Armstrong will provide a second act to the evening, also playing the banjo, harp, guitar and bagpipe in her production of “Songs of the Season,” a mix of classic holiday songs and stories.
Performances will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 and 12; and at 1 and 4 p.m. Dec. 13. Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for students and seniors, and $10 for children under 12. Call 782-3200. Tickets are also available for student matinee performances at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 8, 9, and 10.
