Betty Jo Swain
1938 – 2009
PLAINWELL, Mich. — Betty Jo Swain, 71, of Monmouth, passed away Nov. 21, in her son’s home in Plainwell, Mich., after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born April 23, 1938, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of the late Alma June Smith and Harry J. Smith. She lived and worked in New York City, where her son Adam was born.
In 1971,she remarried and moved to Monmouth, to be closer to family. She was a wonderful craftsman, designing and making custom leather handbags, sandals, and clothes. Her second career was working for the state of Maine as a mental health worker. She was well-known for her empathy, humor, compassion, and caring way with the residents and staff there. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and friend.
She is survived by her son, Adam; daughter-in-law, Charlene; and grandchildren, Nicholas and Kerry.
