DEAR SUN SPOTS: In a recent online article in the Sun Journal I read about the Veterans Memorial. My wife, Muriel Peck (nee LeBel), was only 20 years of age when she volunteered for the WAVES in World War II (1942). It was noted by the Navy recruiter in Lewiston that he was the first woman to volunteer for duty in the WAVES.

How do I get her name engraved on the Veterans Memorial? She was a member of Women’s Post 188 of the American Legion and a charter member of the Women’s Memorial in Washington, D.C. She is living at present in Virginia. Thank you. — John H. Peck, U.S. Navy (retired)

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I would like to know how I could get my husband’s name on the veterans’ wall. His name is Leslie A. Hood. He served from 1942-1946. He passed away about six years ago. Thanks a lot. — Rita Hood, Auburn

ANSWER: Paul Bernard, chairman of the Lewiston-Auburn Veteran’s Council told Sun Spots that any veteran who has been honorably discharged can have their name engraved on the memorial, regardless of where they live. To obtain an application, write to Bernard at 451 Lower St., Turner, ME 04282, e-mail laveteranscouncil@megalink.net or call 225-3285. The veteran does not need to be deceased to be included.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m trying to find someone in Lewiston-Auburn who does alterations at a reasonable cost. It’s a great service to the community that this column does. — No Name, Lewiston

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Where can I have a zipper put on a leather jacket and how much would it cost? — No Name, Lewiston

ANSWER: Sun Spots came across two seamstresses, although there are undoubtedly more in the region. If you are one of them, Sun Spots will be glad to include your information in a future column.

Chez Dorea, 277 Lisbon St., Lewiston, open Monday to Thursday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dorea said she might be able to install a zipper; it depends on the kind of leather.

Cecile Giguere, 1048 Sabattus St., Lot 28, 784-3028. Cecile says she has done leather jacket zippers before.

As for the cost of the leather zipper, it will depend on the difficulty of the task, so they will need to see your jacket.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have done my Farrington genealogy and now hopefully can find pictures (or copies of them) to go with the names.
